Rowdra – Rasa1

October 30, 2009 2 comments

I thought doing a sketch based on a theme. The first one to strike my mind was navarasas (9 emotions) .Wikipedia defines rasa as “something that denotes an essential mental state and is the dominant emotional theme of a work of art or the primary  feeling that is evoked in the person that views, reads or hears such a work” . Rasas give colour to human life. The nine rasas are

1. Shringara 2. Hasya 3. Bhibatsya 4. Rowdra 5. Shanta 6. Veera 7. Bhaya 8. Karuna 9. Adbhuta

Case in point – Rowdra

Rowdra is anger and all its forms. Outrage over audacious behaviour and disobediaence, the fury caused by an offense, the rage evoked by disrespect and anger over injustice are all forms of Rowdra.

In this sketch, a symbolic representation is used to explain Rowdram.. Imagine how much anger should one guy have over the other person  so as to think of squeezing a guy like a sheet of paper.

A more interested reader can refer these links to know more abt rasas.

More charcoal…

Just when i thought things were going gud between me and my pencil, little did i realise what happened. The fingers of the hanging person didnt come out that gud, i tried to correct it and the result —the mess was more messier!!! That didnt stop me from posting it nonetheless:P

Few other titles that crossed my mind… kai kodukum kai, udavum karangal….

This is my first full fledged attempt sketching using charcoal. It was indeed quite challenging. I personally think this is my first sketch which did justice to my blog’s title ” Light and Shade”.

This is my attempt at the Uzhaipalli silai at Chennai. This is an abstract art in the sense attention is not given into minute detailing of the features but to the overall feel. I have used charcoal a little bit in this sketch.

The Common Man

I am a big fan of Kamal Hassan. I loved his recent movie Unnai Pol Oruvan and incorporated the common man theme into this. My small way of celebrating his 50 years in cinema…

I always loved to draw cartoons..Couple of months back when I happened to go to Fedex kinkos, I saw this greeting card on encouragement. It was very nice n funny.  This toon is from that card… It kind of boosts the morale especiallyduring tough times.
